A tool for checking things should be usable by everyone.
This site and the HashLume app are built to be usable by screen-reader, keyboard-only, low-vision and reduced-motion users. This statement sets out the standard we aim for, what we actually do, where we deliberately deviate, and how to reach us when we fall short.
Conformance status
This website targets WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We check it with automated audits and a manual keyboard review before each release; the date of the most recent review is at the foot of this page. The deliberate exceptions are listed below.
What this website does
- Full keyboard access — a skip link jumps straight to content, and every control is reachable and operable by keyboard. The screenshot viewer is a tab list with arrow-key navigation that follows reading direction. The FAQ uses native disclosure controls.
- Structure assistive technology can follow — landmarks and a single heading outline on every page, and alt text on every meaningful image. The decorative hero animation is hidden from assistive technology.
- The demo speaks its result — the “flip one bit” demo announces how many bits of the digest changed in a polite live region, and changed characters are shown in bold as well as in colour.
- Motion you control — the site honours your system's reduced-motion setting, and the pause control in the top bar stops the hero animation and the screenshot slideshow at any screen size. Your choice is remembered, and it overrides the system setting in both directions.
- Fifteen languages, real right-to-left — every page is published in 15 languages with correct lang and dir attributes; Arabic and Hebrew get right-to-left layouts.
- Readable by design — self-hosted fonts with no third-party requests, comfortable touch targets, and layouts that reflow down to 320 px wide without horizontal scrolling.
The HashLume app
The Mac app's App Store page lists the accessibility features it supports, so you can check before you download:
- VoiceOver — controls are named for Apple's built-in screen reader, and digests are read out in groups.
- Sufficient Contrast — text meets WCAG AA contrast in both the light and dark appearance.
- Reduced Motion — HashLume follows the system setting and also has its own Reduce Motion switch.
- Dark Interface — a true dark appearance.
- Differentiate Without Color Alone — a match or a mismatch is never shown by colour alone: every verdict has its own symbol and is written out in words.
The app ships in the same 15 languages and needs no account and no sign-in.
Documented design exceptions
- Digests and commands stay left-to-right, even in right-to-left languages. Hexadecimal digests, algorithm names and the openssl command keep Latin direction in Arabic and Hebrew, because their order is their meaning.
- The demo's input box is left-to-right. It hashes exactly the characters you type, and a fixed direction keeps what you see in step with the bytes being hashed.
- The “page not found” page is English-only.
